Betraying Expectations.

An extended inquiry project.

“The single story creates stereotypes, and the problem with stereotypes is not that they are untrue, but that they are incomplete. They make one story become the only story”.

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

Hello there,

To understand what this site is about, take a moment to Read This:

Unorthodox: adj. different from what is usual or expected in behaviorideasmethods, etc– Cambridgedictionary.org.

We live in difficult times, in a society where each and every day we tackle daunting problems: discrimination based on country of origin, occupation, gender, race, sexual orientation, religion, lack of religion, emotional manipulation and various forms of extremism. History, Psychology and Sociology are all fields that have shown us that man’s greatest weapon is his curiosity. The need to understand life’s mysteries, and put them into groups so they may be further understood, and find their application and how our findings may be of assistance in our daily lives. While this may be a healthy and helpful curiosity in a laboratory with a specimen, it is not so healthy or useful when it comes to actual human beings. Human beings are the most complex beings on earth, you cannot fix them into neat little packages with labels on them based on any kind of criteria. That doesn’t stop people from trying though! From profilings to prejudice it is apparent the human race has a long way to go when it comes to becoming stereotype-free. But these boxes, these stereotypes, where are they from? Where do they get their power from? This ePortfolio website serves as a means for me to explore these questions, answers and the consequences for all of us.

Through my research I hope to…

Understand…

The power (mis)representation has, the need to address its abuse and why the fight against stereotypes is so important.

Discover..

The stereotypes you are a perpetrator of, the ones you just assumed were true and the ones you have been a victim of and how you can grow from your knowledge.

Experience…

The transition from a narrow minded all believer, to a bridge builder and a liberal minded individual ready and equipped to take on the complexities of the 21st century.

Why is all this important?

We all have wondered why and where stereotypes are from, why our personalities, experiences, outlook and journeys are altered(not always positively) by the smallest things. Your gender, race, occupation, country of origin, appearance color your experiences and opinions. Perhaps understanding and answering these questions will help us build more bridges, not walls and help us navigate the life we live everyday.

“If you want to dispose of a people, the simplest way to do it is to tell their story, and start with ‘secondly’…
